The hotel was originally built as a private house back in 1886 by Alexander H. McIntosh, founder of local furniture manufacturers A.H. McIntosh & Co. Ltd. In later years the Victoria House as it was then, was sold to Mr Mario Caira who, with his sister Gina, developed it into the first class hotel it is today.
